French Polynesia covers an ocean area about the size of Europe (whithout Russia), but the total land area of the islands adds up to only 1554 sq. miles.

There are some 118 islands and 271,975 inhabitants in five archipelagoes ; the Society islands (including Tahiti), Marquesas, Tuamotu archipelago, Mangareva and Australs. All these islands are of either volcanic or coral origin.

Tahiti the biggest island in French Polynesia, lies in the South Pacific, half way between Australia and California, approximately midway between Tokyo and Santiago. Tahiti covers an area of 402 sq. miles. This beautiful, luxuriant island is dominated by the towering peaks of Orohena (7337 ft) and Aorai (6786 ft). Most of the islands of French Polynesia, even those of volcanic composition, are ringed by coral reefs enclosing turquoise blue lagoons.
